Looks like an ankle injury suffered this past week will keep Tyreke Evans off the Team USA roster. NBA FanHouse is reporting:
The Sacramento guard, who suffered a sprained left ankle in Tuesday’s first practice of training camp that wiped him out for the week, is resigned to the fact he won’t be invited back for the Aug. 10-16 training camp in New York and for the World Championship, Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey.
It’s probably for the best. As cool as it would be to see Tyreke on Team USA at such a young age, keeping him nice and healthy is the way to go.
An MRI performed today on the left knee of Sacramento Kings center Spencer Hawes revealed a deep bone contusion and an irregular signal in the joint line. Hawes is going to seek a second opinion from Dr. Lawrence Holland in Seattle tomorrow morning. Holland previously performed surgery on Hawes’ left knee prior to his rookie season.
Hawes will miss the team’s remaining six games of the 2009-10 season.
Spencer Hawes’ season is over, which is definitely the best idea for his career. No need to risk seriously injuring himself over these last six games. Hopefully this will not require extensive treatment/surgery and he can be ready in time for training camp later this year.
“He’s pretty sore,” Kings coach Paul Westphal said. “He’s almost certainly out (tonight at Minnesota).”
Hawes said he was kneed in the back of his knee. He missed Sunday’s loss in Cleveland because of a lower back strain.
Even though Spencer Hawes has been sort of obliterated by Al Jefferson this season, I think against a matchup like Ryan Hollins or Darko Milicic (who is apparently the new centerpiece for the Wolves franchise) could be very good for Spencer’s confidence.
Against guys like Love and Jefferson, he’s just not quick or strong enough defensively to guard these guys straight-up. He has to get a quick double team help and pray the Kings rotate properly. And especially against Jefferson, he seems to bite on the pump fake way too often/easily. However, against someone like Hollins or Darko, Hawes would be able to play off and be a dangerous weakside shot blocker. He also would be able to crash the boards while keeping his man off of them. Offensively, he can stretch them to the perimeter where they’re completely ineffective as defenders and use his quickness inside for a couple of good scores.
With him out, the Kings will feature a heaping dose of JT and Landry. This also means Brockman should get some good minutes. My condolences to the Wolves bigs for the bruises and sore muscles Brockman will cause.
In yesterday’s game, Dominic McGuire apparently tore his right plantar fascia. I’m not medical expert but I did watch a lot of ER when Clooney was on the show. They never really tackled the whole plantar fascia world so that didn’t really help me determine it would be painful.
Regardless, Kings have announced he’s done for the year, which probably ends his run with the Kings. I love having a guy like McGuire on the roster. He was actually pretty good with the Wizards before this season when he started and basically was their defensive specialist. I’d love for him to rejoin the Kings this summer. Seems like a good guy and a hard worker.
Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans will miss the team’s next two games (at Boston 3/26, at Cleveland 3/28) and will be re-evaluated on Monday, according to President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.
Well that kind of sucks but it’s probably for the best.
Years ago, I was playing in summer rec league game and was knocked unconscious while trying to dribble out the clock as the other team was attempting to foul us to extend the game. Got hit with a dirty forearm shiver to the head apparently. I couldn’t tell you because I don’t remember. I just remember having the ball and then being on the ground looking up at everybody standing over me.
I wasn’t right for like two weeks. Considering Reke took a much harder hit to his noggin, this is probably smart for the Kings to keep him out against two physical, defensive teams in the Celtics and Cavs. There’s no rush to bring him back when the season is basically over. It’s disappointing because imagine what the Celtics and Cavs can do on their homecourts to the Tyreke-less Kings when the Nets just slapped them around.
Oh well, on the bright side the Pistons might pass the Kings in the overall standings, giving the Kings a better chance at a Top 3 selection.
“When he hit me I blacked out and went into shock mode,” Evans said. “I couldn’t remember anything. They kept asking me what quarter was it and I said ‘first’ so I was way off and couldn’t come back in the game.”
That’s kind of scary. Good to see he’s doing better.
As you know by now, Tyreke Evans took an elbow (not intentional) from Ersan Illyasova during the Kings double OT loss to the Bucks Friday night.
The word after the game was a chipped tooth, gum laceration, concussion and a possible broken jaw.
Well the update today is that Tyreke Evans has a bruised jaw line and will be out for about a week according to Jimmy Spencer of NBA.com. Jimmy received the news via text message from Evans’ brother.
So I was perusing the Sacramento Bee as I tend to do when I wake up and I came across this piece from Sam Amick about Beno and Westphal differing over playing time. In it, we are getting two different stories about the condition of Beno’s feet and the results on the court because of this injury.
Paul Westphal is saying the sore right foot and plantar fasciitis has slowed Beno Udrih down a step, which seems completely logical. Westphal kept Beno out of the game on Wednesday and instead played Sergio Rodriguez. But apparently, Beno said he was “fine” and okay to play basketball on the injured foot. He says he’s been dealing with it all season:
“I’ve been icing it after every game, playing with it. I didn’t say I don’t want to play because of my plantar fasciitis. I said, ‘I’m fine.’ He just decided he’s going to play Sergio. That’s his decision. Not mine.”
This is a point in which you’d like players to put the ego aside and gain some perspective. The Kings are a bad team right now and can’t seem to get a W to save their lives. When Kevin Martin came back, it meant that Beno’s starting spot was going to disappear. In fact, his minutes were going to be cut because now you had a player coming back and taking away starter’s minutes in the process. Add in Beno’s bad foot with a serious nagging injury and the fact that Sergio Rodriguez seems to get things done on the basketball court in his limited playing time and of course Beno is going to see a dip/hit in his minutes.
But instead, he’s going to pout a little and claim that he’s no longer being involved.
You remember this conversation he had with Carmichael Dave on Media Day?
This was frustration with the Theus/Natt regime (more Natt than anything) of throwing him in the corner and making him a spot-up shooter. But I don’t see that going on since Kevin Martin has returned from injury. Beno is still getting opportunities to run the point, run the offense and create like he loves to do. You’re still seeing pick-and-roll plays with him. You’re still seeing him come off screens and create mid-range jumpers.
So what gives?
Maybe this is Beno’s default complaint. When things aren’t going right for him, he decides that he’s just being thrown to the corner (literally and figuratively). Personally, I think it’s dumb for him to play through this plantar fasciitis. It’s a serious injury that can have damaging long-term affects if it isn’t treated properly. He needs to sit some games now to get his body right rather than try to play through it on a team that will be lucky to reach 30 wins.
With the money he’s signed up for, it’s better to fix the injury now with rest and treatment than feed his ego and need to prove the validity of his contract.
