What if the video tells a contrary story than the mainstream narrative? Cousins hasn’t earned the benefit of the doubt throughout his career, but what if this time he should?
Let’s watch the video once more then offer some analysis here.
First up, O.J. Mayo is grabbing and yanking at Cousins, who’s not even his man, the entire possession. He is trying to hold Cousins back so he can’t cut to the lane for a rebound. Mayo, not Cousins, instigates the contact and continues to grab at the Kings starting center. At one point, Cousins even crosses his arms across his own groin area.
As the hand fighting continues, Cousins attempts to pull away to chase down the rebound, while Mayo continues to grasp at his arm. I could easily make the argument that Cousins was trying to shake loose of an illegal hold by Mayo and in the fracas, the Mavs guard just catches one in the groin.
From the picture above, you can see that Mayo is still holding and grabbing after Cousins hits him below the belt. I will make a few other observations here as well. First off, this isn’t a Reggie Evansgrab-and-squeeze situation. Whatever happened, happened in the blink of an eye. Second, it’s not like Mayo went down in a heap, which is the typical response for a man hit in the groin by a 6-foot-10, 270-pound center’s swinging arm. Lastly, Cousins doesn’t react at all. He doesn’t look back or say anything.
Of course, Mayo made matters worse with his postgame comments, placing blame squarely on the shoulders of Cousins and his “mental problems”. Cousins is difficult and yes, he has major impulse issues, but really? This is a physical game, Mayo. You were the one grabbing and clawing Cousins from the blindside. In the process, you just happened to catch one in the groin, so man up.
I’m not a Cousins apologist, but at this point, this 22-year-old kid is running out of allies. I acknowledge that the guy needs to grow up and take accountability for his actions, but this situation is ridiculous. In a league where in the same week, another player gets suspended one-game for throwing his mouthpiece at an official, Cousins gets the same punishment for a reactionary play that can’t be proven intentional? A play where no one was even injured?
Reputation is one thing, but come on.
The Kings no longer want to talk about Cousins and his questionable decisions. It seems pretty clear that from here on out, the Kings are going to let the big fella and his agent, John Greig handle their personal business.
And maybe that’s a good thing. But it also leaves Cousins in the same place he’s always been.
On an island by himself.
I don’t agree with the suspension, but I hope Cousins is beginning to understand his team is losing because of his actions and reputation. The Kings are now 0-3 when he sits and for a player that hates losing as much as I know he does, that should be a tough-enough pill to swallow.

Cousins a thug!!!! he needs to get anger management counseling. he is a POOR EXCUSE FOR AN NBA PLAYER

I see a lot of comments about this incident like the one given by clipfan. What really has this guy done? It’s because he’s been labeled mental that everyone thinks he’s mental. Look at how popular Kim Kardashian is, why is(was) she so popular? Same public spotlight effect. This groin thing is nothing. Hamm makes a good point by pointing out how skewed a punishment this was referencing the mouthpiece incident. This punishment was given because Cousin’s a guy the media has not only shortened the leash on, but in fact, holds by the collar.

Grow up, Cuz. And NBA, you could use some self restraint also.

Cousins would be helped quite a bit by a publicity tour. If he could hit up some talk shows, and sports shows and share his personality there might be some very positive change. I can only assume that the Maloofs wouldn’t want that though as he might be asked questions about their ownership of the team and where the team might be moving to.

I don’t buy it. Cousins knew exactly what he was doing, it was a dirty play, and he’s lucky he only got one game. He clearly grabs the arm of Mayo, extends it out (so that Mayo can’t block himself) and throws a punch aimed right at the groin.

Disagree that DMCs groin punch was unintentional. Everyone grabs in the NBA…especially a guard grabbing a big guy in the low post. If an OJ Mayo is grabbing him, DMC could’ve easily used his body or his arms to push his arms off…instead he’s standing there playing handsies with him then goes for the groin punch. I think every one knows by now it’s easy to instigate something with DMC and get under his skin which will result in suspensions, ejections, and technicals. It’s on DMC to overcome what he created. It’s on him to grow up. If not, then he’s due for failure. Besides, you mean to tell me that every guard who grabs a big guy deserves a groin punch? Please.

Great article, DMC’s definitely didn’t deserve to punished but he’s got to learn to stop talking and just play basketball. I know everyone wants to criticize him, but I think a lot of his issues get way over exaggerated against him, also we need a coach to give some tough love (not like westphal though, like legit tough love).
asingh11
that’s not a punch, you tell me why neither player made any sort of reaction out of the play, if anything it was a “sack tap,” happens all the time in the NBA, and he grabbed oj mayo’s hand because he was all over him, and his arm could have simply extended to push him back, maybe he wasnt aiming for the groin. The point is Oj Mayo definitely esclated an issue over nothing. Like DMC doesnt care if other players are gonna play physical, but when officials and other players are gonna cry when he does it back it’s an issue.

Oj Mayo wasn’t even guarding DMC, and like James said, even Mayo grabbed him in the same spot. It’s called “sack tapping”, happens all the time, guys like Kobe and John stockton have done it. It’s not like what Reggie Evans did at all. DMC definitely needs to show some constraint, but this time, Mayo whined and made an issue over nothing. And it’s not Oj Mayo was writhing in pain from a so called “punch to the groin.” And DMc was looking the other way so i think he was just pushing off for a rebound.

Cousins is a perfect example of having a very talented player in with a team without veteran leadership. He should watch films of Tim Duncan, who I am sure is never fouled without it being called. He will discover why Duncan has so much respect. He doesn’t mouth off to the officials all game and probably gets his licks in when he has a chance. Oh, the other thing is he is extremely talented. Cousins is talented but constantly calls attention to himself by his on court grimacing, bitching and generally immature demeanor. The answer to his problems is staring back at him in the mirror.
The NBA is a joke
Whether the suspension is deserved or not is somewhat irrelevant. Whats lost are the actions the league is taking to suspend him. Given their track record I’m surprised it wasn’t a week long. Heck he gets two games for confronting Sean Elliott – post game, when no one is around, for something Elliott said. If Elliott can’t take some “feedback” then quit giving his opinion. All the while 2 players in an OKC wanted to go fight in the parking lot (how many games did they get?) and Rajon Rondo gets 2 games for instigating a fight that spills into the stands and threatened the safety of fans. Oh yeah, don’t forget that Rondo bragged about going to Mexico during his suspension and not learning anything from it. If DMC said that he would get another 2 games. Its obvious that DMC is targeted by the officials during the game (Violet Palmer is the worst – watch her) and now the NBA front office. Kobe (and any other ”star”) can get every call all game long and when they finally call one against them they flail their arms, complain until the end of the next play – all with no consequence. DMC gets a bad call, turns and walks quickly away while mumbling under his breath and gets a T. The NBA is becoming unwatchable. I guess the only way he will “grow up” and get “the benefit of the doubt” is when the Kings win 50 games. Then you will truly see what a joke the NBA is when the DMC and the entire team starts getting respect and calls from the officials and the league.

Aimed!!! Do you have mental issues? Cousins never looked down!!!
DeMarcus Cousins on an island following latest suspension
13While there’s no excuse for the many shenanigans DeMarcus Cousins has pulled during his three seasons with the Sacramento Kings, his latest suspension, which forced him to sit out last night’s loss in Milwaukee, seems a bit different.
