JR Smith Is On The Block… Should The Kings Go Get Him?

NBA FanHouse is reporting the Denver Nuggets are looking to trade JR Smith and since the Kings need shooting guard depth and a shooter to put around Tyreke Evans, does it make sense for the Kings to go after him?

Let’s take a look after the jump.

That’s a big NO.

    I don’t know if its just me Zach, but the picture isn’t showing, even when I try to view the source.

  • jay

    Pic isn’t working Zachory.

    @Aykis16

    @jay
    Fixed. Thanks, sirs.

  • Tim

    The guy has a lot of issues, while his skill is something the kings need. His decision making is not(on the court) Not saying he wont be an immediate fan favorite. If i was Petrie, I’d stay FAAAAR away from this one.

  • Won

    wow, but jr is exactly what the kings need ON the court!!! ron artest was a huge liability to have on a roster, but nothing bad really happened. can we not have that same faith in jr? artest is worse than jr anyday… just saying..

  • Won

    but yeah… after looking at that picture… i mean, he had to have gone into the tattoo shop and say, “yeah, gimme a “SWISH” on my throat..”
    only a psycho…

  • Tim

    I was actually talking about ‘on the court’ meaning him being prone to launch 40ft jumpers throughout the game, and cause distractions. Im just saying no in a sense so DMC and Reke can mesh, without worrying how many touches JR gets a game. If we dont have to give up much, id say go for it. Depends on how desperate the Nuggets are to trade him.

  • http://www.nobrainerdeals.com ryo

    I don’t think the kings will pick him up or anybody else. They 1. Don’t want to increase payroll 2. I think they will want to see how the new team meshes before they start tweaking it.

  • Dale

    How bad was Ron Artest when he was on the Kings? I never missed a game and he was always a much better class act than most of the cry babies on our team at the time. What is everyone referring to? His Past? He was tops in defense! A Kobe stopper and who ever else was the top scorer on the other team. I still lament his trade!

  • Jah

    Couldnt agree more with Dale. Definitely not a fair comparison to RonRon. He was here for a short while, but fans still remember the great teammate Artest was (still vividly remember him steppin up for Kmart when Sheed was tryin to punk him), the heart he played with every game, and how he did what was asked of him defensively and offensively. JR is no doubt a great shooter, but there are many reasons why Karl would bench him regularly. Dont see how “artest was worse than JR any day.”

  • won

    i meant worse as in, off court demeanor. i agree, i liked ron on the kings (only when he wasnt shooting 3s), but i dont miss him.

  • Aaron

    we had a lot of veterans when artest was on the team, now we’re a lot younger so JR Smith’s attitude could have an extremely damaging effect on our future, I don’t want to see tyreke calling his teammates selfish

  • Cameron

    Agreed Aaron! This team is still maturing itself, and doin a pretty good job of it. Don’t forget folks we have Dalembert as a veteran presence on and off the floor now as well and that guys huge into charities, works with NBA cares ALOT, he was the face for the NBA’s Haiti’s fund. We don’t need someone like JR killing THAT kind of chemistry! If this whole team can get their heads strait, it could do some really incredible things on AND off the court in the next few years!

  • Dan

    I know it was a different situtation, what being that this is a rookie team compared to the veterans we put together in the late 90s up to ’05, but try and remember the last time we put a bunch of hotheads on the same team. Chris Webber, Doug Christie, and Brad Miller were all big egoed wild cards but that is why we loved the team and thats what got the fans involved. This is something that not many people outside the organization and ACTUAL fanbase know. Sac thrives on us taming down our Big Players to play TOGETHER and direct all their hate towards the other teams. This is what the Maloofs and Petrie have been doing all these years and something I feel they will do again. JR SMITH COME TO SAC! We get that 3 point shooting, a 3rd option, and another member of what might one day be the HARDEST squad in the NBA. Tyreke, Boogie, JR/Casspi, Landry, and Dalemburt/Thompson? That’s just dirty

  • tony

    yes this would be a great addition to the Kings’roster, it would be automatic playoffs

  • Brian

    To those talking about what a great teammate Artest was when in Sac… we’re looking at the past through rose-colored glasses. For Adelman in his first year, he was a perfect angel. After that… not so much. He’d sit out games due to “injuries” that the coach would be totally unaware of, and yes, had off-the-court issues as well (remember the animal cruelty arrest?)

    That said, I’d agree generally with the sentiment that Ron-Ron wasn’t all that bad, but he’s a guy that played when he had a reason to play, and didn’t when he didn’t.

  • Won

    we need a jason kapono

    It will just add to Kings’ woes if they get a problematic player like JR Smith. Thier future is better served theoritically now with T. Evans, J. Thompson, O. Casspi & D. Cousins.
    However, if they want to hasten their growth into an elite team, they could try trading for Melo Anthony. They still hava $14M cap space to flaunt. So they could get the burdensome contract of A. Harrington (5 yrs, $35M) & maybe JR Smith (& buy him out before he poison the locker room). Give O. Casspi, J. Thompson, 1st round pick, & Dalembert’s expiring contract. This will save Denver at least $18M this season & provide young players to start rebuilding.
    Both sides wins.

  • Rich Carr

    I think that will be good to get Jr and give up Garcia.He can help Tyreke get to the rim better,cause he is a 3 point shooter

  • won

    ok, all of u who say that he would be detrimental to the young roster are dumb. this isnt an afterschool club. if u have anything to say about actual basketball play chemistry then great, but if ur gunna blab on about influence and all tis other nonsense, go watch a rerun of mr rogers. we are talking about basketball, not folsom prison. what a bunch of garbage. lets talk BASKETBALL!!!!!!

  • won

    if u talk about jr being a bad influence, what the hell do u know? you talk like you have been in meetings with petrie and the maloofs. ur just a bunch of insecure fans waiting for a sure shot like a webber bc the kings have been on a bad run. the kings need to take a shot at a pure athlete like jr if they ever want to enhance their star players. jr on the nuggets was unbelievable. if u disagree, u dont know jack about hoops

  • won

    and zach, what a great picture to post up of a player u ask on ur blog whether u think we should pick him up or not. why dont u just say it, u obviously hate him. ive lost respect for u and ur poor choice of pictures. every athlete has tattoos that arent classy as u may like. ur an asshole zach. as a blogger, u fail

  • http://www.cowbellkingdom.com Zach Harper

    @won
    Use your words, Won. How do you really feel?

  • http://www.cowbellkingdom.com Zach Harper

    Just to update everybody: http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/08/25/police-j-r-smith-involved-in-altercation-at-nuggets-practice-f/

    JR Smith tried to choke someone at the Nuggets practice facility apparently.

  • Rich Carr

    I’ve read all u guys answers on jr trade, that will be nice if the kings can get him but maloofs are not going to trade for him cause they don’t want to win in Sacramento, they want to move the team to Las Vegas. Bottom line they need a 2 guard that could spread the floor so I’ll love to welcome Jr Smith to Sac-town.

  • http://www.cowbellkingdom.com Zach Harper

    @Rich Carr
    If the Maloofs want to move the team so badly, why are they giving $300 million to the current arena proposal?

  • Rich Carr

    If they going to stay why don’t they trade,Jt,Omri & Garcia for Melo and Jr that will put money back in their pocket if they spend 300 million on a new arena.

  • http://www.cowbellkingdom.com Zach Harper

    Because Melo doesn’t want to play here. He’d just leave next summer.

  • Rich Carr

    If they do that trade what do they got point Tyreke,2 guard Jr, small forward Melo,power Landry or Cousin and center big Sam that squad could beat la flakers or Miami sleep so I think they win title he get new contract 5 yr 85 million.

  • Rich Carr

    Jr is the missin link for the playoffs I think. (need a starting shooting guard) Garcia need to get traded or come off the bench, I wonder if Wright could be a starter we need but he is better coming off the bench too. I like his defence. Maybe Donte can play 2 guard and put Garcia at the 3 behind Casspi. But anyway we got a good team they just have to find the best position for everyone, and who is going to start. GO KINGS……..

  • Won

    Rich, whatever it is that you said made no sense at all. anyway, zach, all im saying is that putting up something like that is bound to get negative responses. we all obviously have our likes and opinions about players in the league, but as a blogger who always writes great stuff, this one was just bad. so what if jr tried to push and shove another guy, that happens EVERYWHERE in the world on the courts. it is a physical game. were you trying to make a case or something? because more than half the league has been in fights at some point. cmon, ur smarter than to truly believe that jr could be the doom of the kings organization. the dude is a straight up baller, and has the tools the kings NEED

  • Won

    the reason why i brought up ron artest was only to makea point that regardless of character, skills are more important. and he wasn’t a distraction to our organization at all, so why cant we make the same case for jr? is he really that bad? so what he drives bad and is a bit stupid, physically, he is what we need. if someone wants to make the case that hes uncoachable, then fine, touche. but is he really that big of a risk?

  • Rich Carr

    A tho gettin Jr will be nice but Monte Ellis is on the block too, I will rather get him than Jr anyday, or Baron Davis.

  • Dale

    @Won
    I agree that the Kings have a way of providing the respect to these players and having them come around to a more team approach. Webber was one. Artest I thought was also very good with us. I’m sure if Petrie and company have a sit down with him, they can tell where his true passions are and go from there. But I know they tend to be very affected by character with their players. They also saw no problem with Cousins either. And they were looking and said, I think it was Mario (paraphasing), “I don’t see it!”

  • Cameron

    Anyone here who actually believes JR would be a good influence on this team on OR off the court is kidding themselves! The man is a cancer. Why do you think Denver has had him on the block so many times? And why would ANY of you want him to take touches away from Reke, Beno or Garcia? Just because a guy can shoot doesn’t mean he truly BELONGS on a young rebuilding team. And just as a side note; George Karl is a GREAT coach, has JR’s attitude ever gotten better? Yall SHOULD already know the answer to that one.

  • Rich Carr

    Well y’all are right, but he’ll help this team over the past two years the kings won 42 games. I’m a die hard kings fan all I want to do is win if we keep losing how long will Reke will stay.

  • Brendon

    Who would you give up? The youth looks promising and we now have the veteran experience in dalembert, I say at least ride it out for 15 games then make any neccesary moves.

  • Rich Carr

    Nope we need a starter Garcia is better coming off the bench, or he’ll be the one who get traded.
