From Marc Stein: Mavs Interested in Kevin Martin

Marc Stein is reporting that if the Kings are having doubts about Kevin Martin, the Mavericks are willing to strike up a deal.

One hypothetical trade scenario could see Dallas offer Howard, Drew Gooden, J.J. Barea and cash to the Kings for Martin and Nocioni. That, however, is a lot of long-term salary for the Mavs to add. It’s also not known if a combination of payroll relief, Barea and the opportunity to resurrect Howard’s career would ultimately be enough to satisfy Sacramento even if Dallas was willing to take on Nocioni as well.

I still think it’s insane to deal Kevin Martin right now unless you’re getting someone like an Al Jefferson in return. It takes more than four games to determine if this backcourt duo can play together.

But this deal would shed a lot of long-term salary the Kings are committed to and if they decide not to pick up team options on Josh Howard and JJ Barea, it would shed another $17 million off the cap this summer.

I still say keep Martin for now.

    I agree we should definitely keep Martin

    I feel like I’m taking crazy pills every time I see a “Martin and Evans aren’t compatible” article leading to a “Martin is trade bait” article. The only people that make personnel decisions based on 10 games currently run the San Francisco Giants front office, and look how well that has gone for them.

    @Brandon Gallawa

    My favorite part about all the “Martin is trade bait” stuff is that it is painfully obvious that it is not coming from any incite into whether they are compatible (since, you know, they have played so much together). The fact is that other front offices think they can poach Martin for very little and fans of other teams play with the espn trade machine a bit too much.

    The Kings need a big who can rebound and play some defense and, even if they are “compatible” together, i wouldn’t be shocked if Martin got traded eventually in order to try and get such a player. But why on earth would the kings rush into this? Do they really need to get rid of Martin’s contract? Seems like they have a fairly flexible salary right now, they just have a lot of wing players and lack of front court depth. That is hardly a good reason to dump one of their best players for change on the dollar. I don’t see the harm in waiting this thing out awhile.

    i think the kings should target a big and deal thomas with a expiring contract and kmart and try to get a al jefferson

  • DonDon

    and Kmart is 1 0f 7 now. Sacramento keeps on losing when Martin return.

    @DonDon

    Is it really kevin martin’s fault that JT and Spencer can’t even play at an average rate together?

    the kings losses don’t really have to do with the backcourt as much as they do with the frontcourt

    Lets trade Martin, who’s a great player and a great ambassador to the Kings organization. For Howard, someone who doesn’t even respect our flag. U fans are dumb as fuck!!!!!!!!! We already cut enough salary after getting rid of Miller, and Bibby u stupid fools. U fools are the reason Adelman got fired and look what he’s doing now u stupid morons.

  • Andrew

    @Jason
    Wow that was unnecessary.

    Aye Aye Captain Inappropriate!

    Martin and Evans havent even had a solid chance to show tey could be productive together. To trade Martin at this point is would be backwards as hell.
