Pre-Season Game #1: Kings-Blazers Recap

Well, it’s pretty difficult to recap a game that I didn’t see. I was able to listen to the Kings 98-86 loss to the Portland Trailblazers on the old-fashioned radio but without actually getting to see the action, I really couldn’t tell you what actually happened.

Here are the highlights from NBA.com before I attempt to break down a game that is unbreak-downable:

It’s good to see the highlight lay-ups from Tyreke Evans. I feel like he’ll fill up the majority of the game highlights this year with at least one or two of those every night.

Instead of trying to turn this box score into words, I figured I’d take another approach. It doesn’t really matter if the team wins or loses in pre-seasons. All that matters is finding the players that are improving and belonging on the floor in whatever combination works. So I thought I’d chart all 16 different lineups that the Kings used during this game. Well, technically it was 17 different lineups but one of them only lasted a couple of seconds when Sean May fouled out of the game.

Here are the different combinations from the game with their respective stats:

    Zach, I like how you broke the game down by lineups. Hopefully the starting unit can continue to play good defense and rebound effectively. It’s encouraging to see improved numbers.

    Speaking of which: Greg Oden. Damn! He’s gonna be much better this season.

    Nice recap Zach. Really enjoyed the lineup’s you put out there. That’s actually worth following all pre-season (although I’ll admit I hate doing that stuff) to see if there’s any pattern that comes out of that in the regular season.

    @Patrick
    I think the lineups and what match-ups are probably 90% of what you should take out of the pre-season. And Greg Oden continues to be monsterous. If he’s healthy, he’ll be great.

    @pookeyguru
    Going through the lineups was far more work than I thought it would be but now I’m more prepared for it the rest of the pre-season and will find a nice little chart presentation for it within the next week or so.

    @Zach Harper
    I look forward to that. And that lot of work is exactly why I didn’t want to do it.
